This stunning and superbly hand-crafted antique copper planter or vase is another one of our recent unique finds. It has the most amazing, deeply embossed acorn and oak leaf patterns all around, but what makes this mid 1800s antique stand out from anything we ever saw, are the hand-sculptured satyrs that function as the handles. Many artisans in the 1800s were inspired by what they had learned about mythology and over the many centuries a lot of mythological creatures had been implemented in all kinds of great artworks. Satyrs have always had a special appeal to many collectors around the globe. Also, because they were characterized by their ribaldry and were known as lovers of wine, music, dancing and women. They were companions of the god Dionysus and were believed to inhabit remote locales, such as woodlands, mountains, and pastures. Naughty creatures somehow always are a lot more interesting to people than creatures that are known as dull. This tactile antique is beautifully and very well handmade and over the many decades its patina has made it even more beautiful. This entirely hand-crafted work of beauty can still be used as a vase or planter, but standing by itself, we think, this work of art will never fail to impress either. We feel that only if you realize how difficult and time consuming it is to hand create a piece like this, will you be able to truly realize how special this antique is.
