This is a good, heavy, fiddle-back, sterling silver sauce ladle or spoon, made by Charles Boyton of London and dating to very early in Queen Victoria’s reign, 1838.
The ladle has the classic Fiddle back pattern shape which was first made in England in circa 1760 and prevailed throughout the 19th century. It has an oval bowl and engraved monogram letter to the handle which could be “P” or a “B”
It has a full set of crisp, clear hall marks for London 1838 which was the first year of Queen Victoria’s reign and was made by Charles Boyton (CB) who were a family firm of Silversmiths founded in 1809.
The ladle is made of a heavy gauge silver and has an impressive weight of 74 grams, which is heavy for a spoon, giving it a very good feel when held.
