Clerk’s desks were a business must-have from the mid-19th to the early 20th Century all over America. We believe this one is from Baltimore. They were used in retail establishments, banks, offices, and on farms. Today these pieces are often used to display prized collectables and are a great place to keep journals, diaries and even your laptop. This desk is made of mahogany with pine secondary wood. It has gilt brass & porcelain pulls and an ormolu escutcheon with key. The desk has 3 drawers and a lift-top storage compartment on the top. It has 12 cubbyholes and 3 larger compartments, all of which are concealed if the fall front is closed and locked. The slanted writing surface still has it’s original velvet, which has a lovely patina, so we elected not to replace it. However, these desks are often resurfaced with baize, pool table felt, or leather at o reduction in value..
